Early Head Start

Get Started

1. Begin with the Basics

  1. Watch the 25-minute Introduction to the ECHO Initiative video with key staff to understand the elements involved in getting trained and ready to implement an effective OAE hearing screening program with children 0 – 3 years of age.
  2. Print the Implementation Checklist [PDF] that provides an overview of key aspects of OAE screening program implementation.

2. Partner with a Pediatric Audiologist

Each Early Head Start program is strongly encouraged to develop a relationship with a pediatric audiologist (either volunteer or paid) who can assist with consultation, planning, training and follow-up technical assistance needs. Keep in mind that you need an audiologist with expertise in working with young children.

Ways to find a pediatric audiologist:

  1. Ask your program's Health Services Advisory Committee.
  2. Contact your local Part C/Early Intervention program.
  3. Contact your state Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) Program Coordinator. This individual typically has contact information for all pediatric audiologists in the state and access to many other helpful resources pertaining to early childhood hearing screening, diagnostic, and intervention services (hint – this is a valuable person to connect with!)

Once you identify an audiologist, share this website and, in particular, the:

  1. Introduction to the ECHO Initiative video.
  2. Implementation Checklist [PDF]
  3. Audiologist's Training and Technical Assistance Guide [PDF]

3. Select and Obtain Appropriate OAE Equipment

It is critical to note that not all OAE equipment is effective when screening infants and toddlers in an Early Head Start setting. Learn about Selecting Appropriate OAE Equipment (webinar). In consultation with your audiologist partner, use the Elements to Consider When Selecting Equipment [PDF], OAE Equipment Comparisons [PDF], and OAE Equipment Reviews to help you select the right equipment. If you need outside funding to purchase equipment, consider tailoring the Sample Mini-grant Proposal [MS Word] and submitting it to local charitable organizations.
