Get Started
1. Begin with the Basics
Print the OAE Hearing Screening Implementation Checklist [PDF] that provides an overview of key aspects of OAE screening program implementation.
2. Partner with a Pediatric Audiologist
When initiating a hearing screening program, it can be very helpful to develop a relationship with a pediatric audiologist who can assist with consultation, planning, training and follow-up technical assistance needs. Keep in mind that you need an audiologist with expertise in working with young children.
Ways to find a pediatric audiologist:
- Contact your local Part C/Early Intervention program.
- Contact your state Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) Program Coordinator. This individual typically has contact information for all pediatric audiologists in the state and access to many other helpful resources pertaining to early childhood hearing screening, diagnostic, and intervention services.
Once you identify an audiologist, share this website and the OAE Hearing Screening Implementation Checklist [PDF].
3. Select and Obtain Appropriate OAE Equipment
It is critical to note that not all OAE equipment is effective when screening infants and toddlers. In consultation with your audiologist partner, use the Elements to Consider When Selecting Equipment [PDF], OAE Equipment Comparisons [PDF], and OAE Equipment Reviews to help you select the right equipment.
