Early Identification of Hearing Loss: Universal Newborn Hearing Screening (An Implementation Guide)

Profile of an Newborn
spacer

Cover to Implementation GuideFor over 50 years, there has been widespread acceptance of the need to identify hearing loss at an early age. However, until just recently, very few hospitals were operating universal newborn hearing screening programs. During the last five years, hundreds of hospitals have implemented such programs. This booklet outlines some of the most important issues which need to be addressed in implementing and operating a successful early identification of hearing loss program for newborns. References and suggestions for additional information (see appendices) are given for each step. In completing the checklist, remember that each hospital and situation is unique, and the timing or the specific way in which the various activities are accomplished may have to be modified. However, based on the experience of dozens of hospitals who are now operating successful universal newborn hearing screening programs, the activities described in the following checklist will usually have to be addressed in some way.
