Title: 'Addressing the Need: The MCHB LEND Pediatric Audiology Training Program (2009-2013) '
Track: 8 - EHDI Workforce Issues
Learning Objectives:

Each year in the United States, thousands of babies are born with hearing loss. In fact, hearing loss affects about 12,000 children born in the US each year, making it the most common disability at birth (White, 1997). Unfortunately, there is currently a critical shortage of audiologists who have the expertise and experience to do diagnostic assessments on 0 to 3-month-old babies. To address this critical need, in 2009 the Maternal and Child Health Bureau (HRSA) began providing supplemental grant funds to Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities (LEND) programs to expand and augment their audiology training activities and curriculum to include the field of pediatric audiology. The Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD) was chosen to provide technical assistance to support these LEND programs and to encourage the sharing of curriculum and best practices. In 2013, AUCD conducted a survey of 10 participating LEND programs to collect their accomplishments and challenges over the past 5 years. Results of this survey show that over 80% of the former long term audiology trainees supported through MCHB funding from 2009-2012 are currently working in the field of pediatric audiology and over 33% are currently working in or with rural and/or underserved populations. Each of the 10 LEND programs who responded to the 2013 survey stated that this supplemental grant program has had a significant impact on their LEND program and on trainees, both audiology students and non-audiology students. Participating LEND programs have also commented that they have benefitted greatly by learning from each other, sharing resources, best practices and challenges. This poster will highlight the complete results of the 2013 survey and will provide data collected from the AUCD’s Nation Information Reporting System (NIRS) containing MCHB core performance indicators as well as information on where LEND pediatric audiology trainees are currently employed.
