EHDI stakeholders, from medical staff, to early interventionists are often frustrated when families appear unresponsive to the professional’s recommendations. This can result in conflict or dissonance between the parties involved in the child’s life. In reality, there usually exists various cultural differences resulting in poor communication and collaboration.
This interactive workshop will explore the dynamics that can affect the relationship between a family and the professionals who serve them. We will discuss how education, culture, family interactions have an impact on both parents and professionals as they strive to provide the best care for the child who is deaf or hard of hearing, especially in the early years within the EHDI system.
Participants will be able to: define collaboration as it relates to parent and professionals; Identify social, cultural, familial factors that affect collaboration; develop practical strategies for positive collaboration.
This session will involve the facilitator 1) presenting definitions and examples of factors impacting collaboration using powerpoint, 2) monitoring small group discussions involving case studies relevant to EHDI; and 3) guiding the development of plans for applying the information to the audience’s work. Resources for learning more about this topic will be offered. This session will be of interest both family members and professionals from all points in the EHDI system.

Djenne-amal Morris brings passion and real life experience to her role as a national parent/professional trainer, facilitator and motivational speaker whose view of the world not as it is, but as it could be. As a mother of an amazing son with CHARGE Syndrome (Deaf-blind with multiple health challenges) she strives to build an atmosphere of support and empowerment for families of children who are deaf or hard of hearing and the professionals who serve them. She received a BA is Psychology/Sociology from Clark University in Worcester, Mass.
Djenne has always shown an interest in family , interpersonal and cultural dynamics/collaboration. Fueling her passion for helping others, she served in the full-time ministry, taught parent leadership seminars and worked in higher education in Boston. For 15 years she supported families in her role as Family Specialist for the New England and North Carolina Deaf-Blind Projects and currently works as a Parent Educator/Training Coordinator at BEGINNINGS for Parents of Children Who Are Deaf or Hard of Hearing in Raleigh NC. Djenne proudly serves as the Vice-President of the Board of Directors of Hands & Voices and as a member of the NC Governor's Council of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, Eastern North Carolina School for the Deaf Advisory Council and Brooks Avenue Church of Christ Special Needs Ministry.
Djenne-amal Morris is currently a Parent Educator atBEGINNINGS for Parent of Children Who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Psychology/Sociology from Clark University in MA. She has had extensive experience working with families of special needs children, conducting parent and professional training workshops and has been a Deaf-blind Family Specialist for the past 8 years. She and her husband have served in several capacities in the full-time ministry. Djenne is the mother of a Deaf-blind multi-handicapped son with CHARGE Syndrome, and two daughters, ages 14 and 8. She and her husband Michael live in Knightdale.
