Effective Answers to The Most Common Questions From Nursing Staff

With more than a decade of regular operation in nurseries that vary in size, care levels, protocols, and practices, nursing staff are critical contributors to the efficiency and effectiveness of EHDI programs. In contrast to primary care physicians, audiologists, and intervention providers, nursing staff may come from a variety of different educational backgrounds and have varying levels of experience with the newborn hearing screening program and EHDI goals. Though they may be informed as screening programs are initiated, over time and as a result of staffing changes, the knowledge base may be reduced. Thus, it cannot be assumed that current staff will be comfortable and confident addressing topics related to screening and other steps in the EHDI process with parents. The partnership between nursery and screening personnel affects thousands of babies and their families just entering EHDI systems. Ensuring that nursing staff questions and concerns are expressed and addressed with appropriate and accurate information improves the quality of care each baby and their family receives. A survey of 100 hospitals using the same screening protocol and screening service provider will identify those questions that require ongoing communication by newborn hearing screening program leadership to ensure that newborn hearing screening programs develop and maintain the knowledgeable support of nursery staff.

Melissa Richardson, M.S., CCC-A has over 30 years’ experience in many areas of audiology; including newborn hearing screening via OAE, ABR, and AABR, pediatric diagnostics, hearing aid fitting and maintenance, Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) program, ECHO/Early Head Start, and public school audiology. Melissa also has experience in industrial OSHA screening and military hearing assessment as well as supervision of post graduate on and off campus practicums. She has participated in mission programs for hearing aid assessment/fitting and hopes to do so again. She received her BS in Communicative Disorders from the University of Mississippi in 1981 and MS in Audiology from the University of Montevallo in 1985. Melissa is a long standing member of ASHA and the Alabama Board of Speech, Language, and Audiology Association. Melissa resides in Birmingham, Alabama and enjoys reading and any outdoor activity.

Sandra N. Davis, Au.D. is Area Supervisor at Peloton Newborn Screening Service. She has performed diagnostic evaluations and hearing rehabilitation for pediatrics and adults in Otolaryngology clinics. As an Account Manager, Sandra has provided education and training for professionals about the uses and benefits of hearing instruments along with assisted listening devices. She received her Master's degree in Audiology from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. Sandra received completed her Doctorate in Audiology at Salus University's George Osborne College of Audiology. She is board certified in Audiology. She currently resides in Houston, TX.
