As both a parent and professional, presenter will offer a unique perspective to encouraging professionals with how to help families accomplish the goals that have been established.
Often professionals become frustrated with families who do not follow through with their recommendations. This presentation will help providers to evaluate why this may occur as well as evaluate their own expectations and how they are presented when working with parents and families.
Providers will also learn how to assist families by presenting information in a supportive manner to build an effective partnership with families, as well as how to utilize parent to parent support in reaching their goals with the families.
- Participants will learn how to evaluate if what they’re doing is helping from a family's perspective
- Participants will learn how to identify barriers to collaborative efforts with families
- Participants will be able to identify unique characteristics to working with “difficult” families

Shelly is the Statewide Family Services Coordinator in the Educational Resource Center on Deafness at the Texas School for the Deaf. Shelly coordinates programs and services that promote parent involvement, as it relates to families with children who are Deaf or hard of hearing Shelly and her husband Jon live in Austin, TX with their 2 Deaf adopted teenage sons. Jon and Shelly have been involved with parent support groups and working with families relating to both deafness and adoption for the past 12 years.
