16th ANNUAL EARLY HEARING DETECTION & INTERVENTION MEETING
February 26-28, 2017 • Atlanta, GA
| Is Once a Year Language Assessments for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children Enough?
While EHDI helps identity deaf/HH infants, it does not ensure that these newly identified infants have age appropriate language development. There is a critical window for language development, called the perceptual window, which closes at around 11 months of age. Therefore, if our initial interventions are not effective we need to know when to provide a secondary level of prevention to eliminate more long lasting effects of language delay or deprivation. The LEAD-K bill establishes a secondary prevention mechanism, which allows language monitoring during the critical periods and would then allow the introduction of secondary prevention given that the original intervention was not able to achieve age appropriate linguistic milestones.
- Gain understand of how early language assessment is critical
- Be able to identity the problematic lacks of frequent language assessment
- Enhance the knowledge of how initial intervention is not enough
