Legislative Mandates for EHDI
In March 1993, the NIH Consensus Development Conference recommended that all babies be screened for hearing loss before being discharged from the hospital. As of the Summer of 2005, there are 37 states (plus the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico) with statutes related to universal newborn hearing screening.

| Grants for States EHDI Programs
In April, 2000, the Maternal and Child Health Bureau awarded grants to 22 states to assist with the planning, development, implementation, and refinement of early hearing detection and intervention programs. In October of 2000, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) awarded 15 state grants to assist with developing EHDI tracking and data management systems. The ideas described in copies of these grant proposals from various states may give you some ideas for how you can improve EHDI programs in your area.

2004 State EHDI Survey
During the first quarter of 2004, state Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) coordinators were asked to complete a state survey about their program. The survey was developed to obtain data which would represent the status of EHDI programs in general, and uncover areas where changes, enhancements, or improvements would make EHDI programs more effective.
