Screening with OAE/A-ABR

Electrode Placement

Beth: You seemed a little concerned when I mentioned electrodes, so I'd like to give you a little background so placing them doesn't sound so scary. Sensors or electrodes are like gentle band aids placed on the skin before screening. Their job is to pick up the very small brainwave responses from the hearing nerve that we measure in the automated-ABR screening. In order for this to be successful, we have to make good contact or what we call low impedance with the skin. Now “Impedance” is a word that describes the contact between the skin and the electrode and it's measured on the screening equipment before it starts. If the impedance numbers are too high, it means that the contact between the electrodes isn't good enough to run the test. If you have low impedance, there's a better chance the screening will run smoothly.

Jordan: Okay. Electrodes are starting to sound a little less intimidating. Makes sense. I can do that.
