As more and more states implement early hearing detection and intervention (EHDI) programs, it has become clear that the success of these programs depends on successful tracking and follow-up to ensure that babies referred from the screening program (hospital) receive appropriate and timely diagnostic audiological and early intervention services. However, experience has shown that the most challenging aspect of an EHDI program is keeping track of patients through the screening, referral, and diagnostic process.

EHDI Data Management Booklet
"One of the most challenging aspects of establishing an EHDI program is information management. If the only task were to count and report the total number of births, the number screened, the number who passed and the number of non-passes, program design would be very easy. When all the other information necessary to follow-up and track babies is added in, program design becomes much more complex. Even the simplest of programs generates an astounding amount of data which can quickly overwhelm the capacity of a poorly conceived management system.
The purpose of this booklet is to assist in the selection and design of an Information Management System (IMS) that best suits the requirements of your EHDI program."
State Data Management Contacts
The tracking and follow up for border babies is a major concern in the data management of EHDI programs. Obviously this is true in every state but is more of a concern for some states than others. As a means of assisting in the tracking and follow up of these babies who are born in an adjoining state as well as to help follow up for babies who move to another state just after birth, we have listed data managament contacts for individual U.S. states, territories and commonwealths.
