NCHAM's Early Childhood Hearing Outreach (ECHO) Initiative, funded via an intra-agency agreement between the Office of Head Start and the Maternal and Child Health Bureau, is expanding its outreach to ensure that all Head Start programs across the country are using up-to-date hearing screening practices to satisfy their requirements to screen all children for hearing loss. Participants in the training on May 3rd had the opportunity to learn about the importance of objective hearing screenings and to develop hands-on skills by screening children at a local Early Head Start program. Head Start programs are being encouraged to work with their State Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) programs to ensure that the screening results they obtain can be linked the EHDI data systems and reduce loss to follow-up from newborn screening.
